Nursing Division

The Morgan County Health Department (MCHD) Nursing Division is open Monday through Friday from 8am -12 pm and 1 pm – 4 pm. The office is closed for all government holidays.

The Nursing Division currently employees two full-time nurses to provide the following community services.

Immunizations

The MCHD offers vaccines in accordance with guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. The clinics are by appointment and are held on Tuesdays in Martinsville from 9 am – 2:30 pm. Walk-in services are available if time permits.

Immunizations are available for children from 2 months through 18 years of age. A parent or legal guardian must accompany any child between the ages of 2 months through 17 years on each visit. If the parent/guardian is unable to come, a signed and dated note must accompany another adult authorizing the administration of vaccinations. A current shot record must be brought in for the visit or shots will not be administered.

Adult vaccines are available:

  • Insured: Shingrix (shingles vaccine), Tdap, Hep A
  • Uninsured: Tdap, Hep A and Hep B

Blood Pressures

Free screenings are available at the health department on a walk-in basis, as time permits. Blood pressure clinics are currently available once each month at the Martinsville & Mooresville Senior Citizen Centers.

Tuberculosis (TB) Testing

Mantoux TB skin tests are available by appointment to individuals from four years of age through adult on Mondays from 815-9 am or 2-3:30 pm and on Wednesdays from 815-10 am or 2-3:30 pm. Each person receiving a TB test must be available to return to the clinic to have the site checked on Wednesday (if administered on Monday) or Friday (if administered on Wednesday). The client must return on the appointed day for the results or the test will be invalid. The fee must be paid before the test is administered. Visit the Fee Schedule Page for details. Current policy states that this health department does not read TB skin tests performed at other facilities.

The following individuals should be screened for TB:

  • Close contacts of persons known or suspected to have TB (e.g. sharing the same household or other enclosed environments)
  • Persons infected with HIV
  • Persons with certain conditions known to increase the risk for disease if infection occurs
  • Persons who inject illicit drugs
  • Residents and employees of high-risk congregate settings (e.g. nursing homes, correctional facilities, mental institutions, other long-term care facilities, and homeless shelters)
  • Healthcare workers serving high-risk clients
  • Persons born outside the US and Canada, including children. Prior vaccination with BCG is not a contraindication for testing, nor does it affect the treatment protocol
  • Infants, children, and adolescents exposed to adults in high-risk categories
  • Locally defined high prevalence groups (substance abusers, migrant workers, the homeless)

TB tests are required for the following jobs and/or schools:

  • Employees of licensed child care facilities
  • College Students
  • Foster parents/families
  • Community Corrections (Work Release)
  • Healthcare personnel

Please call our office at (765) 342-6621 if you have any questions.
