Nonprofit Organizations

You may not be required to hold a Food Establishment Permit if you are a certain kind of not-for-profit entity. You may check the charts here (under "Food Establishment Exemption Information") to determine your status or call the Health Department at 765-342-6621 for information.

However, even if you do not have to have a Food Establishment Permit, you are required to follow good food handling practices, for the health and safety of your customers. Please read through the information below and apply the proper techniques and useful information to your event.

What is a nonprofit organization?

Many nonpublic schools, religious organizations, and nonprofit organizations are not included in the definition of a food establishment, and are therefore not regulated by the Morgan County Health Department.

Some examples of food establishments that are not regulated and not inspected by the Morgan County Health Department include:

  • Nonprofit organizations operating for fifteen (15) or less days per calendar year, including bake sales, dinners and fish fries
  • All church bake sales and dinners
  • All parochial/private school concession stands and bake sales

To see the definition of a food establishment, review the Guidance on SEA 190 (Nonprofit Exemptions).

  • Church
  • Religious Organization
  • Nonpublic Educational Setting
  • Civic, Fraternal, Veterans, and/or Charitable Organizations

Please review Information on Cooking for Groups, and a training brochure for nonprofit food volunteers.
