Chip Seal
As part of the County's roadway maintenance program, the Highway Department annually chip seals approximately 30 – 40 miles of roadway. Chip sealing is one of the most cost effective ways to maintain, protect, and extend the life of our roadways. By self-performing the chip sealing process, the material cost is about $16,000 per mile versus contracting out an asphalt overlay at a cost of nearly $100,000 per mile. It is estimated that chip sealing saves $6 - $14 in future taxpayer expenditures for every $1 that is invested today in extending the life of our roadways (savings figures sourced from INDOT).
During operations, the existing pavement is coated with liquid asphalt, which seals cracks and provides waterproof protection. Once the roadway is coated, loose aggregate is spread and compacted. Any excess material is then swept from the road. On select roadways, crews will return to fog seal the new driving surface and apply new pavement markings if they existed prior to the project. The travelling public will notice that some of the chips may be loose for a few days following the chip sealing process. These surfaces are safe to drive on and traffic on these roadways will help further embed the chips into the liquid asphalt as time goes on.
